This new book, just published, is presented ten years later as a “revised and expanded” version of the earlier book, and while it definitely is that, this bare description greatly understates the degree to which this new book now covers virtually every aspect of the Pope Pius XII question, and thus has been transformed into what must now be. The book examines Pope Pius XII's Concordot with the German authorities in in which Pope Pius XII insisted that Jews in Germany MUST BE treated with Christian charity.

As an aside, readers should know that Catholic authorities have historically made concordots with political regimes hostile to the Catholic Church to protect Christians within the regimes' borders/5(25).

This is a good book about Pius XII, although sometimes very hard and critical. Also his references are also from a critical source. I read the book because I wanted to fairly understand the controversy about Pius XII.

I still believe Pius XII was a protector of the Jews in WWII and does deserve to be declared a saint by the Catholic by: 1. Pope Pius XII's alleged silence in the face of the destruction of the European Jews during World War II has been the subject of a fierce controversy that has continued unabated ever since Rolf Hochhuth's The Deputy made the charge so spectacularly in Numerous critics have accused Pius of everything from deliberate anti-Semitism to collusion with the Nazi Cited by: 9.

Ina German playwright wrote a play depicting the pontiff as a moral coward. Then, in the book “ Hitler’s Pope: The Secret History of Pius XII,” journalist John Cornwell also accused him. His book is both an attack on Vatican theology and the character of Pius XII.

It claims that it shows that Pius XII was anti-semitic culturally as well as doctrinally and suggests that if Pius were more collegial and less authoritarian Pius would have been more demonstrative in his denunciation of Hitler than he was Pius might have not only saved his reputation but helped in /5().

Pope Pius XII book. Read reviews from world’s largest community for readers/5. There are two aspects to this book, worth considering separately: first it offers an account of the life an papacy of Pius XII; second, a moral appraisal. The former, one may judge according to standards of history.

The latter offers little to a non-Catholic other than not particularly edifying instance of circular moral reasoning/5. In the end, Cornwell's assertion that he began his book as a defense of the Pius XII is difficult to accept. Most of his sources are secondary and written by Pacelli's harshest critics.
